This week’s blogs we’re looking at Gleniffer Credit Union, and will hear from its assitant treasurer Kathleen. Gleniffer Credit Union (GCU) serves the communities in PA1, PA2 and PA3 postcodes and is supported in its day to day running almost entirely by local residents and members of the credit union.
Engage Renfrewshire work with Renfrewshire’s credit unions through Renfrewshire Affordable Credit Alliance and recognise the important role they play in our communities. Not only by providing affordable credit options and banking services but by supporting development of communities and individuals.
Kathleen is one of these indviduals; she started as a member of the credit union but decided to become more involved over two years ago. She is now the assistant treasurer, and also assists with marketing and opening new collection points, most recently in the Tannahill Centre in Ferguslie.
All new volunteers receive training on just how the credit union works but even with previous accounts experience Kathleen said of her volunteering that “you learn new things all the time and I love to get involved in new projects.”
Kathleen feels strongly that the breadth of what you can learn through volunteering with the credit union makes it a truly rewarding experience and encourages anyone considering not to “be scared of learning new things, we are there every step of the way and enjoy it”.
She also praised her colleagues at GCU, saying that her favourite part about volunteering was the new friends she had made “as everyone one is lovely to work with!”
As usual we asked Kathleen for her three adjectives to describe her volunteer experience: “social, challenging, exciting”.
